Layering serves multiple purposes. According to Watson Anthony of Hairstyle Camp, it can create additional volume, and also lead to more defined curls. This seems to be particularly true for people with lower-numbered curly hair (think types 3-4a). On the other hand, without layering, an equally appealing, but different look is achieved. Namely, curls may become lost under the weight of equally-long strands of hair, and hair will have a very “bushy” look at the base [Anthony, 2023]. Both the layered and the non-layered curly looks can work well if done properly. Nonetheless, layering seems complicated enough in general that we’d recommend visiting a professional to help achieve those layers.
