I am the proud owner of a rectangle-shaped face. That’s right, I have a very defined jawline. In years past, long before I ever knew that there were six basic face shapes, I hated my jawline. I’d compare myself to all of the other ladies who I thought had more “acceptable” face shapes such as oval and heart. Moreover, hats didn’t fit well, and my head always seemed to remind me of a box.
When it came to styling hair, I suffered greatly because I saw a plethora of great hairstyles that I naively thought I could just go and get myself…. and then they didn’t look great on me when I did.
I really didn’t know what to do.
Until I learned that faces come in different shapes, and there is beauty to every face shape.
It was important to determine which types of hairstyles were best suited for each face shape, with the goal being to bring balance to a look.
I always knew that there were certain hairstyles that I wore that just seemed to work – not just for my own appreciation, but even those that gained admiration from others (not that admiration is the goal, but it verified that my choice of style might just have something to it). As I discovered the six basic face shapes, learning the types of styles that accented each the best, I began to realize why some of those “go-to” hairstyles of mine worked so well. They worked with my jawline to create a balanced look.
As I have begun to choose more hairstyles from the categories of those that go well with my face shape, I have also begun to see the natural beauty in my face stand out even more. Additionally, I have begun to see rectangular faces all around me as well. In fact, the other day, I found myself looking in the mirror and thinking, “Wow, I’m really glad I have a rectangular face!”
