With summer fast approaching, its a great time to reconsider your hairstyle. Combing everything up into a bun is a great bet, because it’ll keep your shoulders and neck area free from heat-capturing locks or braids. There are many ways to create up-do’s and for this article, we will focus on the bun, and in particular attaining volume.

What Types of Up-Do Buns Are There?

There are so many renditions of up-do’s in the form of buns, and we’ll highlight only a few that we found here. According to Team Beauty Book of Nykaa.com, there are a handful of bun types to consider, broken down by suitability for hair length. Check them out in the table below:

Short HairMedium HairLong Hair
High Sleek Bun
Low Sleek Bun

Twisted Low Bun
Side Braided Bun
High Ballet Bun

Of course, the definitions of short, medium, and long hair are relative, but these suggestions give an idea of what is possible, and questions like “can a messy bun be created with short hair?” are representative of the innovative thinking we love, so if you have a solution for that, please consider sharing via our Thursday tutorial blogs!

In this article, we will focus on how to create up-do’s that have volume, such as the messy bun and achieving the volume needed.

The messy bun is in and of itself innovative, and the cheekiness of it is precisely why it fits so great with the Hairnastics theme of “bold” and “edgy.” It breaks all the rules!

We’re not going to waste anymore time with this banter. Let’s get down to business for our “how to” guide.

How do I Create an Up-Do With Volume?

There are several methods we came across that vary according to the actual end result. There’s the volume that comes with a messy bun:

and then there’s the volume that comes with other up-do’s that have more refined or sleek looks:

We may come back to the second type of bun in a future article, but for today, we focus on the messy bun. To attain the volume that comes with a messy bun, we highlight a technique by Chris Rios of Sally Hershberger Hair.

Step 1: You’ll need a hairspray, and your hair does not have to be perfectly clean. A dry hairspray is recommended for this step, as it adds additional texture. Using your hands to liberally grab chunks of your hair, you’ll apply spray throughout your hair.

Step 2: Create volume by teasing the roots and base of the hair by using a wide-tooth comb or brush. Try to stay away from within 1/2 inch of the hairline.

Step 3: Put hair into a pony tail by bringing it up high using a thick hair tie. Although you can gather hair using your fingers, try not to use a comb, because you want this style to be messy.

Step 4: Tease the ponytail itself using your wide-tooth comb. Do this by picking up random sections of the ponytail and teasing.

Step 5: Spray the teased ponytail once more for extra volume.

Step 6: Gather ponytail into bun by swirling it around (sort of like you would gathering cotton candy). The goal is to swirl the ponytail into a bun while keeping it big.

Step 7: Use hairpins and bobby pins to anchor the bun’s base.

Step 8: Clean up the hairline by gently running the base of the comb over base of hair (beneath the bun).

Step 9: Apply spray once more to the bun and hair base, running hand over hair base to smooth it out.

Step 10: This particular messy bun style comes with bangs, so be sure to tidy up the bangs by combing through.

Wrapping up: To make sure the bun is sturdy and in place, give your head a gentle shake from side to side. If it feels unstable or loose, more hairpins and bobby pins may be added.

Otherwise, Voila! A finished messy bun.

Going through still images just doesn’t give the process the justice it deserves, so we’ve included the link to the YouTube video below.
