Four Reasons Why a Face-Framing Haircut is For YOU

Welcome to Tuesday of the Themed Advertising Campaign.

Let’s face it – most hairstyles today are simply … predictable. Unless you’ve taken up permanent residence on Project Runway, most of your neighbors and friends’ hairstyles consist of ponytails, slight bangs that lack any dramatic appeal, and the general sense that when their hair was styled, someone just gave them “the usual.” One type of “un-usual” hairstyle that we’ll be focusing on in this article is that of hairstyles that use the huge style flex that the wearer’s face shape offers. In particular, we’ll take a look at hairstyles that use the contour of your face to create dramatic, face-framing looks that are simply unforgettable.

These hairstyles are typically those that have not been pulled back in a ponytail, have bangs, and leave the jawline exposed.

Reason 1: The Mystery Factor

The types of face-framing haircuts that we’re focusing on here are those that give the impression that your face is “peeking” through an opening in your hair. They typically include bangs, are at most shoulder-length, and have a fair amount of volume. Check out the following example:

Reason 2: The Inner Creative

Face-framing haircuts give tend to give off the vibe that you have a creative side that you aren’t afraid to let spill over into your hair styles. Hey, most people just let their hair grow out of their heads and hang – with minimal interference. You decided to stir things up a bit, showing that the status quo just isn’t good enough for your hair. Bravo!

Reason 3: The Natural Covering

Don’t want to show your ears, or want to cover the sides of your head? Try a face-framing haircut. Not to sound pedestrian or make light of a great hairstyle, but this type of cut can come in handy during the winter.

Reason 4: The Edginess Factor

Remember, we’re all about bold and edgy hair statements here. You don’t always have to talk about how ingenuitive you are. Let your hair do the talking.

Does This Style Work for All Face Shapes?

It can, but you have to know which textures and lengths of hair will balance each face shape. For instance, if you have a naturally round face, hard edges are not really a thing you have to balance out; you could sport a face-shaping hair style with bone-straight hair, curly hair, or wavy hair. Check out the following examples:

However, if you have a square or rectangle face, and if balance is desired, then it may be best to choose styles that extend slightly past the jawline (not longer than shoulder-length, however), since the jawline will be exposed (read more about face shapes here to read about the prominence of the jawline in square and rectangle faces). Or, if it is really short, try curling out the edges at the base to counter balance the prominence of the jawline.

Remember, with all of these hairstyles, the idea of what hairstyles go best with what face shapes are merely suggestions. Beauty (and style) are always in the eye of the beholder, and you are encouraged to wear what makes you the best version of, well, YOU. Sometimes, depending on your skill level, rules – especially the unspoken ones – can be broken, and you may even end up developing a new genre of hairstyle! However, its safe to assume that the “rules” about which hairstyles go best with which face shapes were made based on what is generally aesthetically pleasing to the human eye.

Are you currently wearing a face-framing hairstyle? What was your motivation for choosing the style, and how hard is it to maintain? Let us know in the comments below!
